![]() ![]() Fortunately for myself I have never taken it upon myself to read the source material on which this movie is based upon, nor had I even heard of it until now. When moving from book to motion picture, there are a myriad of problems associated with such a task, one of which comes from those die hard fans of the original story. The Good: Very impressive cast The Bad: Looks worse than it should Murray is wasted Things I Learnt From This Movie: I want a giant moth City Of Ember was a huge commerical bust and lost its studio a fair few pennies, I'm sure that the fans of the book were not happy either. The story is played out poorly, it all looks kind of hokey and in my opinion it needed to be longer. It's not that it's a bad film, it's just too far from being a good one. Ronan is great as always the same as Robbins, but a stellar cast couldn't save City Of Ember. Bill Murray feels wasted, considering he's the movies antagonist he is barely present and when he is it feels like the role could have been given to anybody. With a fantastic cast including Bill Murray, Tim Robbins and Saoirse Ronan this family friendly adventure tale tells the story of an underground society governed my a selfish greedy Mayor who is hiding several truths from his people. This infamous box office failure is one of those films I never fancied and after finally giving it a chance I understand why. I stuck around for the visuals, mainly, but was disappointed in how amateurish the action scenes in the last 20 minutes looked. Although it's a nice, safe family film, I think a lot of kids will be bored by the time anything happens, and adults will be so-so on it. Her counterpart, the male teen "Doon Harrow," was played nicely by Harry Treadaway. She looks like she's on her way to a good career. Ronan has a plain but expressive and intelligent face, a la a very young Cate Blanchett. The most intriguing actor, to me, was Saoirse Ronan, as "Lina Mayfleet." At first she minded me a bit of Peggy Ann Garner in "A Tree Grows In Brooklyn," but maybe two years older. Nonetheless, the visuals and acting were fine and supporting performances by the always-goofy Bill Murray and Tim Robbins were somewhat entertaining. ![]() I enjoyed the sets of the subterranean city and the teen kids were likable, but it took a little long before anything happened and when it did it was a little too far-fetched with poor special-effects. Lina realizes that the document is instructions on how to leave their dying city.Overall, this was an "okay" film not bad, but nothing that memorable. The writing on the message resembles the writing on labels and books left by the builders in the city. When Lina comes home, she finds Poppy with torn pieces of paper in her hands and mouth, Poppy has all but destroyed the instructions. The opened box is found by Lina’s baby sister, Poppy. When searching the cupboard, Lina’s grandmother finds the box but tosses it aside, not realizing its importance. By now the timer has finished counting down and the lock has clicked opened. It is revealed that the seventh mayor was Lina’s great-great grandfather and the box with the timed lock is in the cupboard in their house. However, both are displeased with their assigned jobs so they exchange their assignments and begin work in their respective positions. ![]() At their graduation ceremony, young people are assigned their jobs: Lina Mayfleet is assigned the job of "Pipeworks Laborer" and Doon Harrow is given the job of "Messenger". Approximately two hundred and forty-one years after Ember is established, the city′s supplies are in danger of exhaustion and its hydroelectric generator is in decay, causing the power to go out intermittently. The goal is to keep humanity safe from an impending apocalyptic disaster. An isolated, underground city with enough supplies for its inhabitants to survive at least 200 years. ![]()
